aim buddy list lost
With all my computer woes, its hard to do anything on the computer. Earlier at Rice I was trying to log onto aim. Aimexpress failed on greenland (linux box) so I turned to gaim. Gaim loaded just fine. When I got to work I tried to log onto aim. I forgot I had left gaim running. So I had to kill gaim on greenland. When I loaded aim, my buddylist was wiped. So i’ll have to be careful of gaim from here on in. So tack another one on the list…

If it’s not possible then follow these steps to recover your buddy list. First make sure you use a computer that has been signed in before with the aim name’s list in which you want to recover. You’re also going to want to make sure that you have your hidden files shown. In order to show hidden files on XP have a windows folder open click tools and go to folder options > click on the view tab > show hidden files and folders > ok. Once you have hidden folders shown go to: C:\Documents and Settings\+NAME+\Application Data\Aim\+SCREENNAME+\userinfo.bag. It will ask for you to open up the file. Select a document program from the list such as notebook or WordPad.
The file contained has a lot of different symbols in it, don’t worry just sift through and find the usernames of your friends copy and paste them back onto your new list and presto you have your friends back.

I just recently lost my buddy list…this isnt the first this incident happened to me and sometimes it takes days, once weeks for it to come back online and into ur list…i think what AOL does is updating different sections of its servers…one at a time…i think thats why it doesnt happen to everyone often…another case is that someone couldve hacked into your account and deleted your buddy list, but for me, that would be the last since i have a very secure password on mine…4-6 characters 2 numbers additional security…(FYI) but if anyone has any questions or additional comments to this situation or know anymore reasons why this occurance happens…give me an email…

I have multiply accounts linked and only one of them is affected. It was just working to which makes me mad. I installed aim 5.9 to a flash drive since triton refused and then I logged on. AimExpress doesn’t work for me at all. It won’t load all the way. And I don’t think that it’s my computer because everything else works fine. like everyone here… ive lost my buddy list… i know all the ways of restoring the buddy list but none of them will work for me because i had reformatted my comp like a few months be4 losing buddy list… for everyone, FYI u cn go to userinfo.bag. its a file in C:/ and documents and settings and then go to application data. Ive lost this file becasue of the reformat. if u saved ur buddy list u cn also load it.. but like many others i have not. I have no idea what to do and im pretty sure that no one hacked me.. ive lost all my buddies except a practically useless group. had 300+ buddies now have 25… sad.. yes i know.. umm to all the ppl whove lost their list, search around on google. i have and ive learned a lot.. tried all of the methods, could work for u but failed for me. theres also an AIM restore but i think the aim workers disabled it. U dont have to trust any of what im saying because im merely a highschool student. i am not to be help accountable for whatever has happened to ur PC/Mac or whatever. This is all i cn offer. there are also many other blogs and forums that speak of ways to fix this stuff. go check out some stuff. just google lost AIM buddy list or restore AIM buddy list. and stuff ect. good luck all and have fun. for me i have just decided to slowly add ppl back thats the only thing i cn do now.. Thanx for the info. This really saved my life of entertainment and communication with my family and friends. I’ve recently lost 240 buddies from my AIM account. Because of this great tip given above, it had helped me greatly. It took me approximately an hour or two to get things back to the way they was but its worth it.

So i have found answer with this problem in slight form.
I have used trillian to Access Aim before so
Like you all, I actually lost my buddy list of 20 plus strong.
For every person on my list Trillian has embedded,if you will
those people names in the “im” someone new window.
So open the window that says “New Im”
when it is blank type in the letter A and it makes suggestions
based on the letter A to the screen names you have talked to before.
So there is their full screen name and all you do is cut and paste.
Repeat after obviously with B and so on through the alphabet but
if used trillian before yahoo names are ending with these following
symbols
so you can identify which names are Aim names
and not Yahoo Names in case you have 300 or so.
So no programs are needed and I tried the Aim Log but nothing

I would use this technique to restore my AIM list, however; I decided to sign onto an older S/N to see if my old list was about, and it wasn’t.. so I logged back into my newer S/N only to find everyone I had just re-entered had been wiped.
My (and my friend’s) best guess is it’s a blip with AIM’s servers, so hopefully they fix it and we can all get our stuff back without too much hassle

I think the meebo idea is a great idea. I think it requires you to have been already using a meebo account. My guess is that meebo caches your contacts. So if you are using meebo or another IM program for aim, then there is a chance that you can recover your buddies!
